A great percussive and melodic instrument to travel with! These kalimbas are made from wood carved to be in the shape of a sea turtle and have 7 adjustable tines in which you play with your thumbs in a plucking fashion.

To adjust the tuning of each tine, loosen the screws and push or pull the tine to lengthen or shorten it. The shorter it is, the higher the pitch; the longer the lower.

Each Kalimba is uniquely different and measures approximately 6" wide x 6" deep x 5" tall.

Fun Instrument and love turtle totems

At first, I was disappointed with the sound when I got this. But I did some research and went on you tube. I was able to tune it to G major and it actually has a nice melodic sound to it. It is addictive and very calming. Just took a while to figure out how to get it producing the best sound. I will probably get a larger one too.

Great kalimba

I bought it because I collect turtle collectibles of all kinds. However, I also discovered that it is a pretty good, workable kalimba. Very satisfied.

Great size and sound

I was surprised how big this turtle kalimba was when it arrived! Even though the measurements are clearly stated I somehow expected it to be the size of my hand because most "finger pianos" I've seen are that size. The metal prongs you flick with your fingers are wider apart than those smaller types I've played and the sound it more rich and full. It is still a metallic instrument but less "tin" than the smaller types.

The hand carving is "careful" (not sloppy) but not too perfect so it doesn't seem mass produced (it isn't, according to the easily removable tag). There are also carved eyes and mouth not visible on the website photo so I've included one, along with a photo that shows size relative to my hand.

The wooden turtle is very light for its size. The base is solid, though, and easy to hold, grip, or set on a hard or soft surface. The sound hole is at the top, just beneath the prongs, so the sound is not affected wherever it sits or is held. It is mesmerizing to play once you start. I always think, "I'll play around for a few minutes" and then it turns into a session! ;)
