Key: A major

The bamboo flute is one of the oldest and simplest musical instruments in the world.  Most cultures of the world have some type of transverse flute (which simply means a flute blown across, a side-blown flute.) Because bamboo grows in most tropical and temperate climates of the world, many cultures use bamboo flutes as their primary wind instrument. Their ease and playability make them a natural choice for many looking to enter the musical arena.

These instruments are well-tuned to major keys to A440 standard pitch. They are fully chromatic (play all sharps and flats), with a minimum 1-octave range. They have an individually colored burnt-tone.

1 year flutist thoughts

I've been playing a $20 Chinese flute for a year now and this medicine flute for 1 month, here are my thoughts.... I wanted to see if I would stick with the habit of playing the flute so I went the cheap route. As I progressed into playing the sharp notes I realized my $20 dizi would not play the F sharp note and the other notes were not that great either which is why I purchased this flute. I am able to play the F sharp and have been able to play it in slurred notes scales such as AFGE. So I assume wit practice I will be able to utilize this flute in the manner in which I was looking for and have experienced.

The G of this flute is very mellow in a good way and the f is a good high pitch. I really enjoy playing this flute. When I compared it to my Chinese flute I realized how much better this medicine flute sounds.

I heard it takes 2-6 months to get use to a flute and this one did take some getting use to. So take my experience with a grain of salt. The holes are in an ergonomic fashion aka not lined up with the blow hole like my Chinese flute. When setting up the embouchure the key holes are 30-40 degrees facing away from you. So going from a flute that as the keys lined up with the hole was a difficult to adapt to. However, my forearms no longer get tight when I'm playing. In addition I have medium to large hands so reaching the G key is a bit harder to reach. With practice I do think that this may not even be a factor just a matter of muscle memory.

Easiest of the 6 hole transverse flutes in my collection of 5

As an aside from the Native American flute and to explore other woodwinds, I’ve started playing transverse flutes of different types. This flute has become my go-to for trying new techniques and warming up for the harder flutes to play that seem to require more exacting technique. For this type of flute, a very easy player! A great starter transverse flute but it will take you farther for recording and performing, no problem.
This flute is not as delicate as my other transverse flutes and I feel very comfortable traveling with it. It’s tough! Would highly recommend it for that reason alone!
